YATH-Yet Another Towel Hook

As printing something we "really, really" needed was the only way to convince my wife that a Makerbot is a good investment, I designed this towel hook. Simply slide the towel into the wedge and it will stay there. For larger towels, scale everything, which can be done within the latest rev of ReplicatorG.
As it turned out, it's pretty usefull for smaller towels. My wife is convinced.

Bre Pettis in 3D!

I got a 3d scan from dimensional imaging at siggraph
I got a 3d scan from dimensional imaging at siggraphIf I keep getting 3D scanned, I'll have to implement version control. Thanks to Mike and Don at Siggraph Studio for helping turn this into a printable model. They extruded the back of my face and then sliced it and got it all set for printing. Also thanks to the crew at dimensional imagining who did this scan using 4 cameras to get the data. Impressive!

Autobot Mod for Cupcake Transformer

As an American, wheels are far better thanlegs. So here is my attempt to enhance the Cupcake transformer with this set of 6 wheels. I've borrowed the stl for the leg to make it all work together

The other reason for creating this mod is to try out my designs for a printable axle. After some trial and error, this is first version that works pretty well

Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces

3d printed Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces where initially created for a Jigsaw Puzzle Game I'd been working on. However I've also found they also make great Key Fobs such as the ones that I've been printing out for all jigsawrenaissance.org Keyed Members.

(If you are one of those and don't already have a key fob contact the Jigsaw Renaissance Maker Space or me.)

Makerbot Mousetrap Challenge: July Update – Cathal Garvey

IMAG0346

Cathal Garvey is working his way through the mousetrap designs!

I have printed the Claptrap, and await further instruction from WorldGnat before I test it because I don’t know how he intended it to be used. I have printed the Tower Bridge trap from Starno, and it’s in front of me now. I’ll share a picture here. It’s awesome. I printed and tested the Merry-Go-Round trap, which sadly didn’t work though I reckon with a redesign, it would!. And as I write this, I am preparing to try printing the next trap in full: The Mouse Motel from TeamTeamUSA.Sorry again, as I’ve been saying for too long. I can’t wait to be done printing these traps and testing them. The designs are really amazing, even when they don’t work. They show imagination and resourcefulness that inspires me in my own designs, and I consider each a victory even when no captive mouse results.

If you haven’t seen the mousetraps on Thingiverse, check them out!

Nophead's power resistor heater block

This is the power resistor heater block described by nophead on hydraraptor.blogspot.com/2009/01/yet-another-quick-heater-hack.html (nophead, if you want to make a thing for this, I'll take this one down and post my pics as a copy, or I can just change the license to one of your choosing) made from the kit available from makergear.com/products/ceramic-heater-core (choose "Power resistor heater kit"). The power resistor acts as a heating element to heat an aluminum block around the heater barrel, replacing the nichrome in other hot end designs. It's installed in my oversized Mini Mendel (which has BARELY enough space in the bottom of the X carriage. Hopefully the radiating heat won't screw up the carriage, but I plan to make a new one when I get it printing anyway.

Thingiverse is flipping some of my pictures upside-down for some reason, I'll try uploading them again later.

DebCamp Party, this Friday (tomorrow)

Tomorrow, Friday July 30, NYC Resistor [0], a local hacker collective, is graciously hosting a party for DebCamp attendees.

There will be a keg of delicious local beer [1] (for a modest charge of ~$3 per cup), but feel free to bring whatever you want to drink as well. Festivities will begin after 7pm.

NYC Resistor is located in downtown Brooklyn:

87 3rd Avenue
4th floor, above the MakerBot offices

It’s very near the red 2/3 subway lines (the 116th st. stop on the 1 is adjacent to the 116th st. and Broadway entrance to Columbia campus). Feel free to travel [2,3] there on your own, or join a group that will be leaving from the 116th st. and Broadway campus exit at 7pm *sharp*.

See you all there!

Brewed only a couple kilometers from NYC Resistor!

Debian Day: Come Learn about Free Software

Debian Day is the time when the Debian Developer community opens up to everyone to come and learn and ask questions about Debian and Free Software. There will be talks, demos, hacking, and conversation. Debian Day will take place from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Columbia University, New York City, New York.

- you can meet Debian Developers from around the world

- New York City Councilwoman Gale Brewer will be talking about how government can foster freedom in technology

- Free Software Foundation’s (FSF) John Sullivan will talk about the FSF’s campaigns for freedom

- numerous people will talk about supporting Debian and Free Software for friends and family, in design, at large universities, in government and for shy people

- the Debian Project Leader Stefano Zacchiroli and others will talk about how to get involved in Debian and Free Software

Debian Day is part of DebConf, the international Debian Conference. After ten editions in nine different countries spanning four continents, and for the first time in the United States, the Debian project is holding their annual Debian Developer conference, DebConf, at Columbia University in New York City. Debian Day kicks off DebConf, is free of charge, and open for everybody interested in Free Software. During this event, there will be a full day of talks on several subjects such as free software in government, design and free software, free software advocacy as well as string of talks about the Debian project and operating system.

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free and open operating system. This operating system that we have been creating is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. Every year, DebConf allows new and existing Debian project participants from around the world to assemble, share knowledge and ideas, make collaborative contributions to Debian, build tighter community bonds and improve communication within the project.

We would love to see you join us at Debian Day. Registration is required but is free.

To register, please send an email with intent to attend to: debianday@debconf.org If you are registered for DebConf, you do not need to register for Debian Day.

Date: Sunday August 1st
Time: 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM

SuperSkein 1.0

Okay, this really isn't a thing but I think it's worth uploading.

SuperSkein is a first-order model slicer that runs in Processing. It's pretty basic still, but since it's object oriented and in Processing (which could be quickly ported to C) it should be easy for the community to hack and improve.

Right now it slices models in /seconds/ that'd totally bog down Skeinforge and can slice models with non-manifold errors without a problem. It's missing nearly all of Skeinforge's features, but I've got a MakerBot to print a more-or-less-viable object from it already.

Happy hacking!

Flash Light Bike Mount

This is a part you can print to attach one of those cheap 2.99 Harbor Freight 9 LED flashlights to your bike handle bars. It uses two zip ties, one to fix the part to the bars and one to fix the light to the part. You might want to add a little rubber spacer between the bars and the part to keep it from spinning around.

Bosques de mi Mente (Forests Of My Mind) is a solo project started in 2007 by a person who has stayed anonymous on his web site. From that same web site, we can deduce that the artist is Spanish. His first release was “Toy Trains” in July, 2007. Bosques’ projects consist of free music, but there are limitations on its derivative uses.
